Plenary speakers

Michael de Villiers
has
taught mathematics and mathematics education at
the Universities of Stellenbosch,
Durban-Westville and KwaZulu-Natal. He spent
sabbaticals in the USA at Cornell University and
Kennesaw State University. His main research
interests are Geometry and Geometry Education,
especially the development of understanding and
appreciation of proof using dynamic geometry
technology. Other interests include applications
and modelling, and the history and philosophy of
mathematics. He is vice-chair of the SA
Mathematics Olympiad Committee, which sets and
organises the SA Mathematics Olympiad. Michael
is the editor of the KZN AMESA Mathematics
Journal aimed at mathematics teachers and
mathematics educators in KwaZulu-Natal.

Marcia
Moremedi
completed her Ph D in
Computational & Applied Mathematics at the
University of the Witwatersrand in 2001. She
currently is a senior lecturer in the Department
of Mathematical Sciences at the University of
South Africa. She is actively involved in
research on fluid mechanics, differential
equations and partial differential equations and
has collaborated work in peer reviewed journals.
She has been involved in various educational
activities, including tutoring engineering,
architecture, quantity surveying and science
students. She also taught for four years at
Promat Colleges. Marcia lectured Applied
Mathematics modules for two years to teachers
registered with Unisa in a project to improve
teachers’ qualifications.

Cathy
Seeley
is a
mathematics educator and change facilitator in
K-12 education in the USA. Her diverse
experience includes teaching mathematics at the
middle and high school levels, working as a
district mathematics coordinator, and as state
mathematics supervisor in Texas. She served on
the writing team for the 1989 NCTM (National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics)
Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School
Mathematics. From 1999 to 2001 she taught
mathematics in Burkina Faso as a Peace Corps
volunteer – see

In 2006, she completed a two-year term as
President of the NCTM. Cathy currently is a
Senior Fellow with the Charles A. Dana Center at
the University of Texas.

Godfrey Sethole
studied at the Universities of North West, Cape
Town, Stellenbosch and the Witwatersrand, where
he completed his Ph D in 2005. Godfrey taught
mathematics at high school level, and worked in
curriculum development at RUMEUS (Research Unit
for Mathematics Education at the University of
Stellenbosch) and in MALATI (Mathematics
Learning and Teaching Initiative) before being
appointed at the then Technikon North West. He
currently is Associate Professor and Head of the
Department of Mathematics, Science and
Technology at the Tshwane University of
Technology. Godfrey has written 20 papers, both
locally and internationally, and 9 mathematics
textbooks. |
