Grade 4-7 South African Mathematics Challenge
Other Activities

The National Mathematics Week 2000-2012 was organised with the involvement of the South African National Committee for the International Mathematical Union (IMU), through its member organisations, the South African Mathematical Society (SAMS) and the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA). Recently the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) coordinated activities.

As from 2013 the National Mathematics Week becomes part of the National Science Week, an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
National Science Week is managed by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), a business unit of the National Research Foundation (NRF).

National Science Week is an annual countrywide celebration of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI).

During Science Week AMESA focuses attention on Mathematics and Mathematics Education with the aim of making Mathematics more interesting, attractive, relevant, challenging, rewarding and engaging to learners and the community at large, e.g. by highlighting the impact of Mathematics on our daily lives and stressing the importance of Mathematics as a foundation for careers in science, technology and managerial jobs. Science Week is a vehicle to popularise Mathematics and to increase public awareness, understanding and appreciation of Mathematics.
